Beyond Gravity, Janine Rewell's first solo exhibition at Vallery, Barcelona

Beyond Gravity, Janine Rewell's first solo exhibition at Vallery, Barcelona

At 23, talented illustrator Janine Rewell of Agent Pekka has become known for works she has produced for such known names as Nokia, Finlandia Vodka, Qatar Airways, Helsinki Design Week and Marimekko.

This March, Janine will be exhibiting never before seen illustrations as well as her favorite portfolio pieces in Beyond Gravity, a solo exhibition at Vallery, Barcelona.

Janine sees art as an escape from universal laws, causalities and reality. "It is a world where gravity doesn't exist and crayfish whistle on the mountain," she says.

"This collection of posters are a tribute to the impossible. It is a close study of creatures that I have never seen and the places that I have never been. The intense colors and geometric vector shapes that my illustration style is known for are now replaced with grayscale oddities and organic pencil textures."

Located in the center of Barcelona, Vallery is the gallery shop of design and communication studio Vasava.

Catch Beyond Gravity on March 4th to 24th at Vallery, Calàbria, 85 - 08015 Barcelona, Spain. To find out more, email info@vallery.es or visit www.vallery.es.

The visual identity of the cultural program showcases Finnish illustration talent

Agent Pekka has produced the communications and marketing material of the Finnish cultural program at the Shanghai Expo in collaboration with Finpro. The visual identity created by Finnish illustrators will be visible in the cultural program's posters, website, press releases and videos.

The cultural program has been divided into themes, and each theme is illustrated by a Finnish illustrator. The illustrators are Sanna Mander, Laura Laine, Maija Louekari, Kasper Strömman, Rami Niemi, Anna Ahonen & Katariina Lamberg, Pietari Posti and Sanna Annukka. Graphic designers Johannes Ekholm and Matti Kunttu created the visual identity for the project. Agent Pekka’s managing director, Pablo Steffa, curated the project.

The Shanghai Expo illustrations are exhibited in February at the Akkuna gallery in Helsinki. The exhibition is open for the public from Feb 12 to 21, 2010. The gallery is open from Tuesday to Sunday 12–6 PM.

Pekka in Madrid

Pekka in Madrid

In early November Pekka took its Heads or Tails exhibition to Madrid to be part of the ongoing Helsinki–Madrid FinDesign show. The show, which opened on November 4th at the Contemporary Art Center, Matadero Madrid, continues until January 10th 2010. The Heads or Tails exhibition was first seen during the Helsinki Design Week in September 2009. The concept in Madrid is the same but as an addition to the original participants Inka Järvinen, Rami Niemi and Antti Uotila, two new illustrators, Pietari Posti and Miika Saksi, were invited to join the exhibition.

Heads or Tails is an exhibition of diptychs for which each illustrator created two posters. The styles and techniques vary and each participant was encouraged to create artworks without a set brief. "We wanted to do something, where we were the client and create illustrations that we like", Antti Uotila, one of the original Heads or Tails illustrators, explains.

Helsinki–Madrid FinDesign is an interactive show that exhibits over several hundred pieces from Finnish designers, artists and companies that work in distinctly different fields. The exhibition is a result of collaborative work by the Finnish and the Spanish: the Helsinki Design Week and the Association of Designers in Madrid DIMAD. The project is supported by the Ministry of Education.

NAPA X PEKKA Exhibition at Helsinki Design Week

NAPA X PEKKA Exhibition at Helsinki Design Week

NAPA X PEKKA brings together the works of illustrators from two different agencies. The story behind the joint exhibition at the Cable Factory goes back to 2007 when the first Finnish illustration agencies, Napa Illustrations and Agent Pekka opened their offices within the same month. Admittedly surprised and somewhat wary at the start, the agencies have grown to coexist on excellent terms and occasionally collaborate to give the field of illustration in Finland a push. The more the merrier.

NAPA X PEKKA presents works from both Pekka and Napa at a single exhibit, allowing the illustrators to indulge their ingenuity and display their skills outside of their day-to-day commercial projects. Napa Illustrations presents the works of Terhi Ekebom, Ilja Karsikas, Pauliina Mäkelä, Jaakko Pallasvuo, Jukka Pylväs, Kati Rapia, Jenni Rope, Kasper Strömman and Jenni Tuominen under a maritime theme, Sea View. Pekka’s contribution, Heads or Tails, is a diptych project featuring art by Jesse Auersalo, Inka Järvinen, Rami Niemi, Antti Uotila and Laura Laine (Unit).

Janine Rewell & Taivas Helsinki win a Bronze Design Lion at Cannes

Janine Rewell & Taivas Helsinki win a Bronze Design Lion at Cannes

The Design Lions winners at Cannes have been revealed, and we're thrilled to announce that the Good Mood pattern for Atria by Janine Rewell & Taivas Helsinki received a Bronze Lion. Pekka congratulates everyone involved in the project!

Taivas Helsinki commissioned Janine Rewell to design a pattern for Finland’s largest food production and processing company, Atria. The brief from Taivas Helsinki's Art Directors Anna-Mia Myllykangas and Jyrki Poutanen was to create a playful, unique and distinguishable look and feel that could easily be adapted for various uses; in business gifts, POS-material, packages, a website, TV, and so on. The result was meant to embody the company's slogan: Good food, better mood.

Finns, born and raised among strong designs and illustrations such as those of Marimekko and Alvar Aalto immediately fell in love with the Good Mood pattern. The design has turned the most ordinary cooking paraphernalia into desirable collectibles that are frequently out of stock. And this is just the beginning. The implementation possibilities of the Good Mood pattern are limitless.

Janine will be exhibiting her artwork at The Picture Room of Agent Pekka from July 20th to 24th.

Pietari’s illustration on the cover of DGV’s new book

Pietari Posti’s illustration was chosen as the cover piece on Die Gestalten Verlag’s new book Naïve – Modernism and Folklore in Contemporary Graphic Design.

The book, as DGV describes it, documents the extraordinary renaissance of 1940s to 1960s Classic Modernism in contemporary graphic design.

“This compilation introduces a new wave of young designers who are rediscovering the stylistic elements reminiscent of classic graphic design such as silkscreen printing, classical typography, hand lettering, woodcutting and folk art and integrating them into their work.”

“Naïve illustrates this new development in graphic design, assembling a multitude of vivid and inspiring examples ranging from illustrations, poster art, editorials, book covers and record sleeves to stationary and textiles.”
